Six schools in Carter County, Tennessee, have been awarded a grand total of $35,795 through the National Rifle Association School Shield Grant program. Many of the schools put in requests for upgrades to their two-way radio systems or additional radios. Other projects included emergency door alarms, security cameras, and security tint for windows.

NRA School Shield, in partnership with The NRA Foundation, has awarded more than $600,000 in grants to support vital school security projects and activities across the nation. A total of 54 grants were recommended to schools in 23 states, including both public and private K-12 educational institutions, aimed to help make our nation’s schools more secure by addressing known vulnerabilities through the implementation of industry best practices in security infrastructure, technology, personnel, training, and policy.

Not long after Williamson County schoolchildren started their academic year in Tennessee, a dozen or so nontraditional students—all experienced law enforcement officials—were also going back to school. But this class had a different agenda. These students were participating in a training seminar on ways to keep young people safe—safe from weather emergencies; safe from fire; and safe from the remote chance that violence could erupt on campus.

 

Featured as a Special Report in NRA’s December 2015 official journals, "Safeguarding our Children" explores the first National School Shield Security Assessor Training hosted by the NRA and discusses the benefits and opportunities for this vital program. A printable supplement summarizes the National School Shield program from background and objectives to program tools and resources as well as opportunities for supporters to get involved.

 

A National School Shield Task Force, led by former Congressman Asa Hutchinson, recruited a team of security experts and, in April 2013, issued an official report documenting a clear need to address school violence and recommendations on best practices in school security.
